I am John Young, a United Kingdom based Health Care Professions Council (HCP)-registered Prosthetist / Orthotist and a member of the British Association of Prosthetists and Orthotists (BAPO) with over 36 years experience in the National Health Service, the private sector and working in specialist orthotic clinics overseas.
My clinical expertise includes all aspects of rehabilitation, treating orthopaedic problems, lower limb orthoses and complex foot and ankle conditions. I specialise in the ultimate lightweight support for polio patients, the carbon fibre full-length calliper, as well as the latest electronic orthotic devices and knee stabilizing systems. I have a vast amount of experience in orthopaedic footwear and diabetic foot management. My other areas of clinical experience include scoliosis bracing, treatment of Perthes disease and control contracture devices.
I have worked as Head of Orthotics for Otto Bock Health Care Plc providing the full range of rehabilitation services, bespoke and complex orthotic devices to the NHS whilst keeping the focus on maintaining patient care. Prior to that I was Managing Director of Orthotic Services Limited, Birmingham during which period I was instrumental in the development and provision of the orthotic services to Malta. I have extensive orthotic experience having initially trained at The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital, Birmingham for 4 years and then in specialist centres throughout the UK, including Stoke Mandeville, Guys and St.Thomas’s Hospital, London, The Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Hospital, Oswestry, and Coventry and Warwickshire Hospitals.
Throughout my career, I have made continual professional development (CPD) a cornerstone of my work keeping my skill base and Knowledge within my field up to date. I have conducted research & development into the Spencer Splint enabling diabetic patients with plantar surface ulceration to walk.
I have a wide experience in all levels of orthotic treatment, from simple foot orthotics to the most complex full-length callipers. I routinely treat severely disabled people with congenital as well as acquired conditions and also have 36 years experience of working with severely disabled children, particularly children with cerebral palsy and Downs’ syndrome.
I am Lead Orthotist and Clinical Director at The Ledbrook Clinic working in close collaboration with the rest of our multidisciplinary team including our Rehabilitation Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapist and Clinical Nurse Specialist co-ordinated by Jeff Lindsay FRCS Ed the Consultant in Rehabilitation Medicine at The Clinic.
I have also prepared reports in collaboration with Dr.Jeff Lindsay and Ozan Altay where clients have complex disabilities as a result of Medical Negligence or Accidents.
I have undertaken Medico-Legal work over many years for both Plaintiff and Defendant and also as Joint Expert. I have always considered that my duty should be to the Court and to give a fair, reasonable and unbiased opinion based on the facts in conjunction with knowledge and experience gained over many years. My areas of expertise are seeing clients who have suffered injuries sustained in road traffic accidents, accidents at the workplace, and other disabilities as a result of medical negligence, where the client will need to be supplied with an orthosis. This includes orthopaedic footwear, all types of callipers, back supports and custom-made insoles. I will see clients for an examination and report dealing with all aspects of their orthotic rehabilitation, long-term consequences and lifetime costs.
Extensive experience in orthotics and orthotic practice, specialist expertise in:
Rehabilitation, Neuro-Rehabilitation, Orthopaedics, Lower Limb Biomechanics, Lower limb Orthotics, Complex Foot and Ankle Conditions, Orthopaedic Footwear, Foot Orthotics. All expertise in adult and paediatric orthotics.
Experience acting as Orthotic Expert for the claimant, defendant and also as single joint expert. Able to provide immediate needs reports.
