Drop Foot and the WalkAide

wa_dogThe Ledbrook Clinic has seen many hundreds of patients with foot drop this year, and the WalkAide FES has proved a highly efficient device to help with this condition. Originally developed by researchers at the University of Alberta, Canada, WalkAide stimulates the nerve to muscle signals in the leg and foot, causing the foot to lift at the appropriate time in the walking cycle. This results in a smoother more natural and safer stepping motion. The WalkAide is particularly successful for people who suffer from Multiple Sclerosis, and the Ledbrook Clinic has assessed and fitted patients ranging from Eliese, who is 8 years old, to Christine who is 55, and is now looking forward to doing her Christmas shopping without having to rely so much on her walking stick.

Just last week we fitted Sarah, who has MS, with a bilateral WalkAide and we will review her in January 2014 to assess her progress. Patients tell us that that they experience immediate and positive improvement in their walking ability, which increases their mobility, function and overall independence. The WalkAide device is small and very use to use, which means even a child can become adept with the WalkAide. Many ladies tell us that they like the WalkAide as it is easy to fit, and can be worn under trousers, or a longer skirt.
