WalkAide: Treatment for drop foot

The Ledbrook Clinic is now supplying the WalkAide

WalkAide, a revolutionary new treatment for drop foot. The WalkAide uses electrical impulses to stimulate the nerve to muscle signals in the foot and leg causing the foot to lift at the correct time during the walking cycle. This new technology means that pateints no longer have to wear heavy orthopaedic braces and special footwear to accommodate the braces, as the WalkAide just fits discreetly on the leg underneath the knee.

For people who suffer from foot drop as a result of MS or Stroke, the FES device is a wonderful aid to lift the foot and the the person from falling over. An article in the Daily telegraph on 15th February reported  that Andrew Marr, the TV presenter, wore an FES and he says in the article:
‘What it does is, every time my heel lifts off he floor, it jolts electricity down the front of my leg, so my toe goes popping up.That means I don’t fall over. It’s like having an electric heel in your sock’ .
Dr Shamim Quadir, from the Stroke Association, said the rehabilitation tool, often used by stroke survivors who suffer from ‘drop foot’ was not painful but may feel like pins and needles.
The Ledbrook Clinic recommends the WalkAide FES as it is very affordable, easy to use, and with the summer months approaching, can be worn with shorts and bare feet. The WalkAide also has an exercise mode, so you can exercise the muscles in your leg while watching your favourite TV programme.
